Children are emotional, physically, socially, financially and intellectually depended on their parents. The process of promoting and supporting their child’s above needs from infancy to adulthood is called parenting. Parenting means raising a child irrespective of their biological relationship. The main caretaker in parenting is the child’s biological parents. However others such as grandparents, siblings, legal guardians and other family members along with government and society also play a very important role in child’s overall development. In some cases, orphaned or abandoned children receive parental care from non-parents, with whom they don’t have any blood relations. Others may be placed in an orphanage or may be adopted or raised in foster care. A good parent is the one with good parenting skill. Parent effectiveness training classes are a good way to learn for any parent.

According to the English pediatrician Donald Winnicott the concept of “good-enough” parenting is in which a minimum of prerequisites for healthy child development are fulfilled. The characteristics that make a person good or “good-enough” parent varies from culture to culture. In addition to this, research has stated that parental history in terms of attachments of varying quality, particularly in the case of bad experiences, can strongly influence parental sensitivity and the behavior of the child.

Each day of their lives parents make deposits in the memory banks of their children. To be a good father and mother requires that the parents let go of their own needs and desires in favor of the needs of their children. What method does a parent use for the upbringing of their children depends on their social class, wealth, culture and income? However, with the change in time, cultural practices, traditions and social norms, the parenting practices has also changed. A family’s social class in which the child is born also plays an important role in the opportunities and resources that will be made available to them. Middle class or working-class children have a disadvantage in terms of schooling, parental attention and other facilities made available to them as compared to the upper-class children. In addition to this lower class families do not get the kind of networking that is made available to the upper-class children through friends, family and various professionals or experts. Parent effectiveness training is always helpful for parents.

Boosting Self-Esteem is a practical thing which can be applied by different ways. Kids see themselves through their parent’s eyes. Since then they start understanding their sense of self as babies. Their body language, the tone of speaking and every expression are absorbed by the kids. More than anything else their parent’s words and actions affect their developing self-esteem. Thus it’s important to encourage them for everything good that they do. Even when small accomplishments are praised, it will make them feel proud. This will help kids do things independently and will make them feel strong, responsible and capable.

Parenting Styles differ from each other. The main parenting styles which can be followed in early child development are authoritative or authoritarian as well as permissive. However, these parenting styles were later expanded to four to include uninvolved style. These styles of parenting include combinations of demand and control on one hand and acceptance and responsiveness on another. A Recent study has found that children’s subsequent mental health and well-being play an important role in parenting style. Parenting strategies, behaviors, and ideas of what parents expect from their child, whether verbally or non-verbally, also play a significant role in a child’s development.

Parenting Practices are just certain tips. A specific behavior that a parent uses in upbringing a child is called parenting practice. For example, storytelling is an important parenting practice for children in America. Reading books to children is one of the common parenting practice which helps to promote academic success. In countries like Germany, parents spend more time in face-to-face interaction with kids. Whereas parents who are staying in more communal cultures such as West African cultures or also who spend more time speaking to the baby about other people.
